TECHNIQUE: Crafted over multiple firings, this piece starts as sheet glass cut into strips and fused together into a patterned bar in a kiln This bar is picked up on a blowpipe in a glass blowing studio called a “hot shop.” The glass is reheated until its molten hot and is then stretched and pulled into a rod called "cane", using a classic murrine technique. The cane is sliced into tiles called murrine revealing the pattern in cross-section. Multiple murrini from this cane are cast in a mold and fired in a kiln with temperatures approaching 1500 degrees until fully fused into one piece. Finally this is shaped by hand, tumbled for weeks, and fire polished for a unique finish
