Rectangle Murrini Pendant | Gold Chain
This striking pendant necklace is made with green glass. The glass pendant is reversible with a satin finish. The gold plated bail is laser welded on. It would truly make a great addition to any glass jewelry collection!
TECHNIQUE: This piece of jewelry begins as various colors of sheet glass cut into strips, arranged in a pattern, and melted together in a glass blowing studio called a “hot shop”. The glass is heated on a blowpipe to temperatures exceeding 1600 degrees. When the glass is hot enough and is moving, it’s shaped, stretched, and pulled into a long glass rod called cane. This cane has the original pattern running through its length.
After cooling the cane is cut into short lengths and these are bundled together and heated again. The pulling process in the hot shop is repeated and the bundle is melted together into one pulled cane. This multiples the pattern and stretches it out to create the tiny detail.
This repulled cane is cut into small tiles of varying thicknesses, revealing the new pattern in cross-section. These pieces, called murrini, are placed in a mold and melted again and are fused into a solid shape. Finally this is hand carved, and tumbled for weeks to give it a uniquely soft satin luster.
