Square Kiln Formed Glass Plate
This BEAUTIFUL glass plate has a white cloud and cyan blue alternating triangle square pattern, and was handmade using a Murrini styled method. The plate was created by combining two reactive opalescent colors that produce a chemical reaction and a stunning red line with the two glass colors meet. This boldly pattered piece is sure to liven up any table top! This plate can be used as a display piece, or as a serving tray. It is food safe but should be hand washed.
TECHNIQUE: Crafted over multiple firings, this glass plate starts as alternating strips of colored sheet glass fused into a pattern bar. The bar picked up on a blow pipe and reheated in a glass blowing studio called a “hot shop”. The molten hot glass is stretched and pulled into a rod called a cane, using a classic murrine technique. After cooling, the cane is sliced into varying thicknesses, revealing the pattern in it's cross-section. Pieces cut from this cane, called Murrini, are arranged into a pattern and fused together into 1 piece by reheating in a kiln. Again after cooling the edges of this piece are ground by hand and fine-tuned. Finally the glass is heated for its 4th time in the kiln. It is placed on top of a mold, and with both heat and gravity it moves, or "slumps" to fit the form of the mold.
