Recycled Kiln Formed Glass Bowl
This striking glass bowl is sure to be a conversation piece! The bright spring green mixed with brown and green center design was handmade using recycled glass. Crafted from opalescent glass, this green and brown glass art bowl is sure to liven up any table top! This bowl can be used as a display piece, or as a serving bowl. It is food safe but should be hand washed.
TECHNIQUE: Crafted over multiple firings, this piece starts as sheet glass. The center is made by cutting strips and fused together into a patterned bar in a kiln This bar is picked up on a blowpipe in a glass blowing studio called a “hot shop.” The glass is reheated until its molten hot and is then stretched and pulled into a rod called "cane", using a classic murrine technique. The cane is sliced into tiles called murrine revealing the pattern in cross-section. Multiple murrini from this cane are cast in a mold and fired in a kiln with temperatures approaching 1500 degrees until fully fused into one piece. Once the center is complete the outer ring is cut by hand and ground to fit around the Murrini center and is fused together. After cooling, the edges of this piece are ground by hand and fine-tuned. Finally the glass is laid into, or on top of a mold and heated just to the point where it “slumps” or moves with gravity when it becomes fluid with the heat, to fit the form of the mold. All together the glass this glass has been fired or brought to melting temperatures 5 times between the hot shop and in a kiln
