This gorgeous glass bowl is sure to be a conversation piece! The flower patterned bowl in tones of orange and yellow was handmade using translucent and opalescent glass fused together in a kiln. This bowl can be used as a display piece, or as a serving bowl. It is food safe but should be hand washed.
TECHNIQUE: Crafted over multiple firings, glass murrine bowl begins as strips of colored sheet glass fused into a patterned panel. This panel is reheated in a glass blowing studio called a “hot shop” and rolled onto a blowpipe. Once the glass starts to melt and is malleable, it’s shaped, stretched, and pulled into a long glass rod, called cane, and has the original pattern running through its length. This cane is chopped into pieces called murrine, revealing the pattern in cross-section. The murrine pieces are combined and melted again in a kiln into a single flat piece of glass. After cooling, the edges are ground and polished by hand. Finally the glass is placed on top of a mold and heated again just to the point where it “slumps” into the form of the mold.
